2024 marked a whole decade since Santander acquired Getnet that helps businesses accept payments securely, while providing the best checkout experience to customers.

The evolution of the business and its technologies has been greatly impactful for merchants in Latin America (LatAm) and Europe. Over the past 10 years, customers in these regions have benefited from global and integrated acquisition, processing and value-added payment solutions for both physical and e-commerce.

Part of Getnet’s overall growth includes the introduction and development of Getnet Argentina. The launch of this branch was prompted following a trip to Getnet Brazil in 2018, where the popularity of Getnet’s capabilities was clear. At the time, the Argentinian market demonstrated similar demand, but it was dominated by two major companies, and merchants had no alternative options for payment solutions. Something needed to change. Just two years later, we launched Getnet Argentina.

Now, four years on from the launch of Getnet Argentina, we wanted to reflect on the hard work that has gone into the company’s growth and our plans for the future.

Timeline of Getnet milestones:

  • October 2020: Getnet was launched in Argentina with a solution for entrepreneurs, professionals, and small businesses.
  • 2021 and 2022: The team continued developing new features and products to strengthen the Getnet Argentina platform, such as Link & Pay, Ecommerce integrations and QR codes as new payment options.
  • March 2023:  We launched our Get Smart POS solution for medium and large businesses.
  • 2024:  Now a known player in the market, we are focused on continued growth and consolidation in Argentina.

The set up of Getnet Argentina and impact of launching during COVID-19

Getnet Argentina was born during the COVID-19 pandemic in October 2020. We were a small team, but we were motivated and determined to make Getnet Argentina a success and had strong backing from the Santander group. The pandemic was incredibly challenging for merchants, with lockdowns requiring many to find new ways to continue their business operations. Launching during this time presented a huge opportunity for us to help merchant customers do just that.

By offering innovative solutions and new digital payment options, we enabled these businesses to continue serving consumers and driving revenue during such a critical time. For example, we launched our first product “Aparatito” at the same time as the business - a simple mPOS solution so entrepreneurs, professionals and small merchants could accept credit, debit and prepaid cards. A few months later, in early 2021, we expanded our offering to include eCommerce integration and “Get Link and Pay” also.

On the face of it, launching a brand in the middle of a pandemic may have seemed like an unwise decision. But there were merchants in need of support, and we were not prepared to let them down just because there would be challenges along the way. We are so proud that our hard work and dedication over the past four years has led to success and growth in the Argentinian market – for both us and our customers.

Getnet Argentina milestones over the past four years

Since launching in 2020 we have grown in more ways than one. Firstly, we launched Getnet Argentina with just three people and have since grown to a team of more than 130 employees. In the past four years one of our greatest achievements has been nurturing this fantastic team of people - they are behind Getnet Argentina’s success and are the reason that the company has achieved such great business growth.

Since launching, our focus has also shifted. While we started out by providing solutions for smaller merchants only, we have since expanded to provide the solutions and tools that bigger companies need. This has had an impact on the solutions we have developed. For example, we were one of the first payment providers in Argentina to deploy an interoperable QR code payment method offering for merchants. We also launched “Get Link and Pay” and eCommerce integrations so merchants can provide solutions for customers to pay online. Our most recent solution, launched in 2023, was “Get Smart POS” - our first solution for medium and large companies.

Despite being a newer player in the market, we have grown fast. This is in part thanks to being the first acquiring company in the market from a bank group, which is advantageous as we can offer our own bundle solution together with Santander. Being part of a bank group, we can also take advantage of the Santander ecosystem which gives us access to lots of data which can ensure we provide our clients with solutions suitable for their needs. Furthermore, we have been developing a global platform with state-of-the-art technology which enables our clients to operate in Santander's footprint countries.

Our growth and brand recognition in Argentina is reflected in some of the big-name brands we have worked with since our launch, and it’s a continuous challenge for us to offer them all the features they need.

Looking to the future

In the past four years, we have done a great job of building a strong brand presence in Argentina. Today, Getnet Argentina is a key player in the region’s eCommerce and payments market - holding our own against competitors that have had a presence in Argentina for over 20 years.

We are confident that we will continue to overcome any future challenges faced with the same resilience as we have done over the past few years. As we strengthen our presence in the region, we plan to launch new features that provide a more robust solution to merchants. We will continue to take inspiration from the company that inspired us to launch - Getnet Brazil - to achieve our ultimate aim of helping merchants in Argentina sell more (and better). Here’s to the next four years!
